The East Rutherford Exempt Firemen’s Association is an organization made up of East Rutherford firefighters who have served seven years or more as an active firefighter. The Exempt Firemen’s Association belongs to a larger group, the New Jersey State Exempt Firemen’s Association (NJSEFA). The NJSEFA is an organization that was formed for the charitable purpose of organizing and coordinating all of the local exempt fire associations in the state of New Jersey, thus lessening the burden of government in this process. The NJSEFA and the East Rutherford Exempts also provide a venue for mentoring and support within the ranks of the fire service from those members who have earned their exemption, and from that experience can lead and assist the new members of the fire service.
In East Rutherford, the Exempts are a proud organization that support those that are currently serving, as well as those who have served in the past. The group also remembers those that have passed on by engraving their names on memorial stones which stand in the East Rutherford Exempt Firemen’s Memorial Park located at the intersection of Paterson Avenue and Randolph Avenue. The public is encouraged to visit this beautiful park and join the ERFD in remembering those that bravely served before us.
